Topic 2: I am unique

Video explanations:

What does it mean to be unique? Imagine if only a small amount of water remained in the whole world, it would be worth millions. Its value increases because  it’s scarce. In the same way, each one of us is exclusive and unique, which is why we are priceless.

Every human being is unrepeatable; no one is the same as another. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anybody like you. That we are unique is written in our very bodies : our DNA is unique, our fingerprints are unique, our teeth are unique. No one else has our character nor our personality.

That is why we say that people have dignity. Dignity means that each person has value in themselves, not in comparison to others, nor as a means to achieve something, but simply for who they are. Our value lies in “being ourselves”, and that is something no one can take away from us. Our worth does not depend on what we own, what we do (even if we were bedridden, our life would have the same value), nor on the approval of others.

In Topic 1 (The Origin), we saw that the first way of loving is gratitude. The second way  of doing so is loving oneself—self-esteem. Loving oneself is not selfishness; it is  aknowledgingreality: that we are valuable. Only then can we recognize that others are valuable as well.

Self-esteem includes:

  • Self-concept: the image you have of yourself.

  • Self-acceptance:  Accepting the good, the bad, what we can change and what we can’t.

  • Self-respect: treating yourself well and valuing yourself.

The people who know and love us can guide us  to know ourselves better, but we are valuable, even if nobody tells us so. Their opinions give us confidence and we do need it, , but they do not increase or decrease our value as a person.

Developing  the mindset of the self-esteem involves not only knowing your qualities but also understanding why do you have them. There is a task that  nobody else can do for you,  which is connected to your talents and interests. The most important question a person can ask themselves is: “What am I here for?”.  This means knowing what you are good at and what you are not and accepting that nobody is good at everything.

Identifying insecurities or  what you don’t like about yourself and talking about it  with people who can help you.

Comparing yourself to others is not a good idea. Remember that you are unique in your own way, and you will never be exactly like another person. .

Remember the positive things your parents, friends, and those who love you say to you,  and  remember it when you  don’t acknowledge how valuable you are.
